Bulgaria is one of the oldest European states with 6000-year-old gold treasures, a centre of ancient civilisations, and the country that gave the Slavic peoples the Cyrillic alphabet. It is a small country by area and population, but it was this spectacular piece of land that God blessed with amazing natural resources, friendly people and a rich cultural heritage.

With a population of over 1.5 million people, Sofia is the largest city of Bulgaria and its capital. The city is located at the foot of Vitosha Mountain in the western part of the country, less than 50 km from the Serbian border. Its location in the Balkan Peninsula makes it the midway point between the Black Sea and the Adriatic Sea. However, the Aegean Sea is the closest body of water to Sofia.

Sofia is the biggest and most dynamic economic centre in Bulgaria. Sofia is home to many of the major Bulgarian universities, cultural institutions and commercial companies. It is considered as one of the top 10 best places for start-up businesses in the world, especially in IT technologies. Sofia is Europe’s most affordable capital to visit as of 2013.

Founded around 7000 years ago, Sofia is the second oldest European city. It has been the official center of the Bulgarian nation for 127 years. Shortly after the liberation from the Ottoman empire in 1878, Sofia was declared the capital of the country. It has been given several names in the course of its history – Serdika, Sredets, and nowadays Sofia (after St. Sofia, the holy lady of wisdom).

Sofia is a fast developing modern city. The city center is an eclectic mix of neoclassical and West European architecture.
